Prior to mowing, turf areas are surveyed for trash or debris and other obstructions. Turf is evenly mowed at a height suitable for the grass species and conditions. Areas unreachable with a mower are string trimmed at the height of adjacent turf. Borders such as walkways, curbs and bed edges are edged as needed.
We recommend "grass-cycling", or returning grass clippings to the soil for improved structure and nutritional replenishment. However, if requested, our crew members can bag the clippings. Bagged clippings can be taken away or left at curbside for the owner's refuse collection.
Utilizing the latest equipment with meticulous attention to cleanliness and safety our maintenance teams meet and exceed the most demanding expectations.
Pruning & Trimming
Our employees are trained to recognize and care for the most common landscape plants in Virginia according to Virginia Tech's guidelines for proper pruning.
It is important to remember that pruning of plants is a process, not an event. Each species has specific pruning needs based on flower production and growing conditions. We prune first and foremost for plant health, making the improvement of fruit, flowers and foliage a priority. Second is structural pruning for plant development, preventing personal injury or property damage. Third, we prune to control plant size or space management.
For your convenience we included Virginia Cooperative Extension's Shrub Pruning Calendar.
Bed Edging and Mulching
Mulch helps control weeds, retain soil moisture and also regulates soil temperatures thus reducing frost or heat related damages to root systems.
We generally provide Spring mulching using high quality, double shredded hardwood mulches but we are available year long for mulch applications including an array of quality hardwood mulches, pine bark nuggets or fines and pine straw.
All mulching is applied according to Virginia Tech Extension Service Guidelines, so as to enhance and improve the health of your garden areas. Beds are edged using a vertical trench method where applicable. Shrub and ornamental tree fertilization and pre-emergent weed control may also be performed at this time. Read more...
Weed Control, Fertilization and Fungus Control
Our lawn care program includes fertilization and weed control. The species of your turf will dictate the type and rate of fertilizer we apply to your lawn. Our goal is to maintain the health of your lawn with minimal chemical use. Our Fungus Control program can be paired with the Weed Control program for best results.
Our programs are designed and timed to maximize effectiveness and are used as a part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach . We believe that proper cultural practices such as correct mowing height, appropriate irrigation schedules and applying herbicides and fertilizers at the correct time of the year will minimize pest populations thus eliminating the need for excessive pesticide applications. Only EPA registered products are used according to label directions and strictly following state and federal requirements. All applications are made by or under the supervision of a Virginia Certified Pesticide Applicator.
